Every year, on May 12th, the world comes together to celebrate International Nurses Day, honoring the dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts of nurses worldwide. At Aga Khan University in Pakistan, this day is a special occasion to recognize the invaluable contributions of nurses in providing exceptional healthcare services. On this day, AKU Pakistan takes the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the commitment and selflessness of its nursing staff, who play a crucial role in the healthcare ecosystem.

International Nurses Day holds great significance as it coincides with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. It serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions nurses make to society and highlights the need for continued investment in their professional development and well-being. It is a day to recognize their hard work, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication to providing quality healthcare to individuals and communities.

The day begins with a formal ceremony where the university administration, along with senior faculty members and hospital management, express their gratitude to the nursing staff. This event provides a platform for the leadership to acknowledge the nurses' hard work, dedication, and their vital role in patient care. Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare system, and their efforts are particularly vital at a time when the world faces numerous health challenges. Aga Khan University recognizes the significance of nurses in delivering compassionate care and ensuring patient safety. Celebrating at Aga Khan University:

 

Aga Khan University (AKU), Pakistan’s leading medical and Research University, has consistently shown its dedication to fostering the highest quality of nursing education, research, and practice. The AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery has been an instrumental force in advancing the status of nursing in Pakistan, grooming healthcare professionals who stand at the forefront of patient care. This International Nurses Day, the celebrations at AKU begin with the Name of ALLAH by Madam Yasmin Nadeem Parpio faculty member of AKU School of Nursing Karachi, and Miss Rahila Head Nurse Agha Khan Hospital, Karachi. They welcomed the audience and give a brief appreciation of the courageous and invaluable service rendered by our nursing professionals. Over the past few years, amidst the global health crisis of COVID-19, our nurses have stood as frontline warriors, selflessly serving those in need while risking their own lives.

The ceremony is officially started by the recitation of the Holly Quran followed by the national anthem, the audience was advised to stand in the honor of national anthem. The welcome speech was delivered by Miss Aziza Lakhani co-chairman of the international nurses and Midwifery organizing committee, followed by Dr. Tazeen Saeed Ali interim Dean at the School of Nursing and Midwifery Aga Khan University, Karachi. She dedicated her life to the betterment of nursing in Pakistan both in clinical and education. She gives an in-depth analysis of the current status and future of nursing she emphasizes the need and struggle of AKU towards Advance Practitioner Nurse (APN). She also acknowledges Dr. Laila Ladak for her immense contribution to the research. Dr. Laila Ladak has received the emerging research and Scholar Award for the Year 2023 from Sigma Theta Tao International. She also acknowledged Dr. Riffat Jan, Shereen Rahim, and Kiran Mobeen as the pioneers of the Midwifery Journal. President Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan Dr. Suleiman, and Provost Dr. Carl Amrhein were called upon the stage to distribute an appreciation certificate among these gems. The chief guest for today’s ceremony was Ms. Sultana Siddiqui, a media partner, television director, producer, and founder of the HUM-TV network. She addresses the town hall by acknowledging the important role of Nurses and Midwives in every situation of life, followed by multiple presenters who address the immense contribution of Nurses to global health.

International Nurses Day at Aga Khan University, Pakistan is a momentous occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional work of nurses. It is a day when their tireless efforts, compassion, and commitment to patient care are recognized and appreciated.
